Great stuff. EVE's camera functionality are a pet interest of mine and I'm always delighted to see more/improved tools in the hope that you're secretly working toward a suite of controls to benefit tournament coverage and machinima directors.
I'm updating my SiSi client now with a view to providing some feedback.

Lyta Jhonson wrote:While you are working with the camera, is it possible to add at least 2-3 second delay before camera resets when focus object is destroyed? It's a major bummer in things like alliance tournament when ship dies and camera instantly resets to cloaked observer ship while viewers were expecting spectacular explosion.
This!
Explosions are there to be enjoyed. Allowing the camera to linger for a moment would be a great inclusion to this update.

After a short session of zipping around outside a station in an interceptor, I can report the tracking looks fantastic and allowed me to admire the newly V3'd station skins in all their glory. It was smooth and the radial menu works as a far better solution than the fiddly little dropdown which preceded it.
I noted a couple of minor things though:
- I found it very easy to inadvertently lose my tracking focus target when double clicking in empty space to change ship direction, causing the camera to revert to focusing on my ship (could this be due to invisible station bounding boxes?).
- Whilst the tracking camera is active, using the radial menu to select the 'look at my ship option' causes the camera to revert to a view of my ship which differs from the 'look at my ship' view when the tracking camera is inactive. Is this intentional?
- When the tracking camera is used in conjunction with the Camera Centre slider (Esc menu), my ship often disappears off screen if any deviation above 50% from centre is selected (on my default resolution of 1920x1080). This effect is less noticeable or negated entirely by using 3840x1080 resolution across two monitors, with my ship remaining on-screen even with 90-100% deviation from centre.
I hope this helps. EVE Online: The Text Adventure --- GameSkinny Correspondent --- Freebooted Blogger |

This too!
I've long campaigned for this feature, I think an optional fixed 'tail-cam' view could deliver a more connected spaceflight experience.
It might also make interceptor pilots motion sick, so win-win. ;) EVE Online: The Text Adventure --- GameSkinny Correspondent --- Freebooted Blogger |

Um.. either something peculiar has happened to the tracking camera or I'm not using it right, but now the Custom Tracking Position function seems to behave like the Esc menu Ship View Camera Settings slider. Instead of the selected object and the player ship being kept in different relative positions, they are both pushed together.
That's not intended is it? EVE Online: The Text Adventure --- GameSkinny Correspondent --- Freebooted Blogger |

Nelly Uanos wrote:Why do I need the use the "center tracking position" to d-scan thing??? I know I might be one of the few, but I always play with the tracking camera on. In the old version my camera was offset to the left and the object tracked wasn't directly behind my ship but I was still getting perfect result from the 5 degree scan. WHY that doesn't work anymore? I don't want to have my ship lined up with the object I want to d-scan... Why did you change this? Or someone tell me how to reproduce that with the new system if that possible, might have missed it.
Nelly Uanos wrote:Re-tested everything... it's now impossible to have any camera offset if you want to d-scan something... Either using the camera offset in the "Esc" menu or using the custom tracking position **** up the d-scan. This suck... wasn't broken... why change it... hate you Now I'm going to be stuck at looking at my target through my ship... which sadly isn't very translucid... Or give me a shortcut to switch from custom tracking position to center position! This was the issue I was trying to express, but Nelly explains it better. The camera off-set 'cinematic' effect has been broken by the new changes.
Are there any plans to fix it or is this the new 'working as intended'? EVE Online: The Text Adventure --- GameSkinny Correspondent --- Freebooted Blogger |

CCP Delegate Zero wrote:It is not entirely clear to me or the team quite what you are describing as an issue. It would be very helpful if either of you could clearly set out the steps you used to take to get the behaviour you found useful.
THEN (from memory)
Prior to the 1.1 revision, activating the tracking camera would allow me to position the target of the camera on the right whilst my ship would remain on the left. Irrespective of how either my ship or the target behaved, their position on the screen would remain constant, making good use of the screen real estate to provide a cinematic view.
So:
1. Activate Tracking Camera 2. Set target to the right side of the screen. 2. Target is kept to the right 3. My ship stays to the left.
NOW
Setting up the same conditions using the new Custom Tracking Position button on the radial menu sometimes causes both my ship and the target to move to the right. In attempting to replicate this I was unable to consistently achieve the same result. Sometimes the expected behaviour would occur: ship to the left target to the right, but occasionally this would not be the case and the camera would shift to both ship and target to the same area of screen (on the right).
So:
1. Select CUSTOM TRACKING POSITION button from radial menu. 2. Drag target square to the right side of the screen. 3. Target is kept to the right. 4. My ship also moves to the right (sometimes).
At some point when I have time, I will endeavour to FRAPS or stream the effect, but at least now I have found it to be inconsistent I realise it is a bug and not an intended modification of the camera behaviour. EVE Online: The Text Adventure --- GameSkinny Correspondent --- Freebooted Blogger |

CCP Delegate Zero wrote:For Seismic Stan: having looked into this matter of the ship possibly shifting, and lacking a video of it, I believe this is a consequence of zooming out. We removed a bound on zooming out with the tracking camera on. This has the consequence that when zoomed out beyond a certain level, the relative positions of the tracked object and ship on screen are maintained with reference to the custom tracking position set on the screen. This will have the effect of shifting the ship away from the centre of the screen 'towards' the custom position. [b]
I've made a short video for your attention. I hope this better highlights how the camera is no longer functioning as well as it used to as a tracking camera.

Nelly Uanos wrote:Still feel your "improvement to the tracking camera UI" is more an improvement to d-scan for people that DIDN'T use the tracking camera at all... I agree with this. I constantly used the tracking camera for aesthetic purposes in order to improve my visual game experience. Only very occasionally would I use the D-scan.
So from my perspective, any change which improves the D-scan functionality to the detriment of the broader tracking camera applications has an overall negative impact.
As I recall, when the tracking camera was first introduced, the benefits to D-scanning were a happy accident rather than by design. It's great that a 'feature' has grown out of it, but that's no reason to tear out the primary and original purpose. In my continuing battle with my misbehaving tracking camera, I think I've figured out part of the issue with regard to the wandering ship location - it seems directly linked to the vertical axis.
The tracking camera is expected to keep the player's ship and the Custom Tracking Position apart so that both can be viewed simultaneously.
This works as intended when both the ship and the tracking camera focus are on the same horizontal plane.
However, the problem arises when the ship moves above or below the tracked object. The more the z-axis relationship increases, the more the player ship deviates from its intended screen position.
I hope this helps. EVE Online: The Text Adventure --- GameSkinny Correspondent --- Freebooted Blogger |
